There are two routes to a doctor on the island: the public health service, organised around the local health centres (centros de salud), and private practices and clinics. Visitors use the public system with a European Health Insurance Card — the GHIC for most travellers from the UK — while holidaymakers with travel insurance and privately insured patients usually go straight to a private practice. Residents registered with the Spanish social security system are assigned to the centro de salud where they live.
